Foreat Athena 5    Wanneroo City 1

Wanneroo City traveled away to Floreat Juniors to play their first match of the season.  On a very large pitch, with a strong wind favoring the southern end, Wanneroo started brightly against the breeze, with some strong attacking moves by Thomas Cleary.  However, Floreat proved to be very strong and capable opposition, and quickly retained possession and piled on a lot of pressure which resulted in two goals by half time.  The lineman was working overtime with over a half dozen off side decisions against Floreat, which shows how much they were dominating play.  One bright light was Aiden Foster who made a strong run on the right, and had an opportunity to shoot at goal, but it was well held by the Floreat keeper.

The second half was played in similar fashion with Floreat in control for the first ten minutes, and scoring 2 more goals.  However, after the ten minute mark, Floreat lessened the pressure and Wanneroo were able to retain possession and started passing the ball more accurately.  Jason Pimmaso made an excellent run on right, after a terrific through ball from Jayden Rayner, and with Roiyan McGovern and Aiden Foster running through the centre, we had 3 players versus the keeper, but unfortunately Roiyan deflected Jason’s cross just wide of the far post.  A similar move 3 minutes later saw Aiden’s strike rebound off the side post.  A last gasp attack in the final minute of the match saw Aiden finally score for Wanneroo with a well timed shot from outside the area, which was just wide enough to evade Floreat’s goalie, and roll firmly into the left hand corner.

Wanneroo’s defense of Ben Porter, Arun Kasipandy, Jake Guyton and Joe Hooton should be applauded as they had an extremely tough day of constant defense against a very capable opponent.  Goalkeeper Matthew Adams made three very courageous runs off his line in the second half and was able to prevent two certain goals by doing so.  The midfield and attacking players tried their best all day, but were well held by Floreat’s defense.  Joe Gregory also worked very hard all day on the left.  The fighting spirit of this team cannot be doubted, as they never gave up trying all match.

Nedlands 4 Wanneroo City 0

Wanneroo City traveled away in wonderful weather down to the foreshore in Nedlands.  Both sides were evenly matched and score line does not represent the amount of possession and scoring opportunities that Wanneroo City created.  Nedlands capitalised on a couple of defensive errors, and had two goals scored within the first ten minutes.  However, Wanneroo did not stop attacking and had 3-4 good chances to score, but the Nedlands goalie had a day to remember with many fine saves.  At half time the score was 0-3 to Nedlands.

The second half was played in similar spirit with Wanneroo attacking very hard, and creating terrific chances, but unable to convert.  As often happens in soccer, Nedlands were able to land a swift counterattack and score one more goal in the second half.  Again the Nedlands goal keeper proved the difference with another string of saves.

Both coaches agreed after the match that the sides were much closer than the score suggested.  Special mention to Jayden Rayner who had been away sick and missed training for 2 weeks, and turned up looking very green on the day to make up a full complement of eleven players.  Second special mention to Aiden Foster who has been plagued with foot soreness, and played essentially on one leg.

Wanneroo City 2  Ballajura 3

Wanneroo City hosted Ballajura at home on the No.1 pitch, all players were excited at the prospect of playing in front of the club house.  Some changes were made to give the defenders a run in attack, plus we had to ask two players from U11 Purple to help, as some of our players were running late.  Despite Wanneroo City trying very hard to maintain possession, Ballajura’s forwards were very skillful and strong, their right winger was wreaking havoc with many strong runs and crosses.  Eventually this pressure told with two well worked goals.  Wanneroo never gave up and excellent pressure by Michael on the left released Jayden Rayner into the middle of the area where he stroked the ball low down into the right hand corner to score.  Ballajura soon were at work on the right wing again, and another superb cross drew the mistake from the Wanneroo defender, and a deflection resulted in an own goal.  At half time the score was 1-3 to Ballajura.

The second half was a less free flowing game with Wanneroo defending grimly with many numbers back behind the ball.  Ben Porter was switched to right back, and was effective in shutting down the right wing attacking avenue that Ballajura had been using.  Finally it was Wanneroo’s turn to counter attack from deep in defence, with Jake, Aiden, Jayden, Joe H, and Joe G all stringing passes together to release Jason Pimmaso into space in the middle, his shot was well saved by the keeper.  Minutes later, a similar series of attacking moves had Jason into space again, this time he made no mistake, and slotted home a low shot into goal.  Final score 2-3 to Ballajura, with Wanneroo winning the second half 1-0.

This match was a very good team effort from all eleven regular players, and the two lads from Purple (Michael and Zen) who played the first half, with everyone trying their absolute hardest for the entire match.  The two counter attacking moves in the second half was some of the best football the team has played this season.

Stirling Lions 0 Wanneroo City 1

Wanneroo City traveled to the Lions Den to meet the previously unbeaten Lions.  In a tenacious display of solid defence, combined with spirited counter attacks, Wanneroo City managed to prevail in a very exciting match.  The first half started very evenly with both sides attacking.  Wanneroo full backs Joe H and Ben had a very solid day, and managed to restrict the run of the Lions wingers.  The Lions had a couple of solid shots at goal but were easily saved by goal keeper of the day, Aiden.  Wanneroo always looked dangerous on the counter attack, with Joe G, Jayden, Jake and Ricky working well with slick passes.  However, the break through came from a Joe G thru ball to Roiyan, who nipped around two defenders and set off for goal, his first shot was right at the goalie who stopped it but then fumbled, Roiyan nimbly tapped the loose ball in for his first goal. At half time the score was 1-0 to Wanneroo.

The second half was a more free flowing game with Wanneroo having more time and space, and were able to spend more time in the Lions half.  Arun had been switched to attack, and was proving a handful.  The Lions kept attacking, and after one very strong run, their player was fouled in the penalty area.  He was unable to convert, firing the penalty shot wide.  Aiden made many fine saves during the second half as the Lions worked very hard to find an equaliser.  Matthew and Jason worked very hard out wide all day to keep the wingers under control.

This match was a very good team effort from all eleven players to win this match against a very capable team,  although we had some luck, we also made our own luck by playing positive football.

Wanneroo City 13    Kingsway Olympic 0

Wanneroo City proved too strong for a Kingsway team with many beginners.  With less pressure the Wanneroo forwards were able to dominate possession, and create many scoring opportunities.  Defensively, Wanneroo was able to slow down the Kingsway forwards, win back possession and then counter attack.  Full credit to the team for playing good football with many strings of passes, and strong runs.  Goal scorers J Driscoll – 3, J Keen – 3, J Gregory – 2, A Foster – 2, R McGovern – 1, A Kasipandy – 1.

Special thanks to the two Joel’s for helping out after playing in tough matches earlier, as we had two players out sick.

Wembley Downs 0  Wanneroo City 1

Wanneroo City traveled to Butlers Reserve to play the “other” red and white team, Wembley Downs, in a catch up match form early April.  It was immediately evident that both teams were very close in ability, speed and strength.  Defence ruled the first half with Ben and Joe H keeping the wingers under control, and Ricky and Arun stopping all central attacks.  Genuine shots on goal were at a premium, with Jason having two clear shots from Wanneroo, one just wide, and another straight to the keeper.  Wembley had similar limited chances with them being easily gathered by Matthew.  Halftime score 0-0.

The second half started in similar fashion, but finally Wanneroo’s passing game started to make in roads, and after a series of well worked passes by Joe G, Jayden and Roiyan, a previously very quiet, Aiden was released into an open left wing.  He immediately surged wide passed the defence, but noticed they were coming back fast and a large hole had appeared in the centre.  He cut back in board at full speed, and then darted between the two central defenders to be one on one with goal keeper, a clean finish on the ground to the right post resulted in an excellent goal.  This started off a ten minute purple patch, as Wanneroo dominated play, Jayden had a terrific long range effort just graze the left post, and then it was Roiyan’s turn to make a strong run into the penalty area, where he was fouled.  Aiden took the penalty, but despite striking it perfectly, it caught the underneath of the cross bar, deflected straight down, and then bounced out.  Aiden was then fouled in the area after another run, but the referee did not blow his whistle.  Unperturbed, Wembley absorbed the pressure and then started attacking again, a long range effort was brilliantly headed wide by Arun.  A second attacking move looked to reward Wembley with a goal, when a heroic last ditch tackle by Ben saw him get enough contact on the ball not to draw a foul.  Unfortunately, he had his hand trodden on during the melee after the tackle, and had to go off for 5 minutes.  With no subs, Wanneroo battled on with 10 men, until Ben was feeling better, but no real chances came again for Wembley.

Once again Wanneroo ran out winners in a very even match, that could have easily been a draw or win to the opposition.

Wanneroo City 12   Noranda 0

Wanneroo City hosted Noranda at home in chilly weather, but good for soccer.  We welcomed back Tom from five weeks in the Old Dart, including a visit to Old Trafford.  He had lost none of his touch as he completely dominated the left wing creating many chances, including a terrific cross to Aiden, who headed in the teams first header goal for the season.  The defence of Joe H, Arun, Jake and Ben were on top, and first half goalie Ricky did not get a touch.  Noranda are a new team, and are not yet able to compete with the stronger Wanneroo players.  Halftime score 5-0, including and own goal.

The second half started with Wanneroo’s midfield of Jason, Joe G, Jayden and Roiyan, still in control, Matthew went into goal, and Ricky went to centre half.  Aiden played very well in the second half to score three more goals, and Jason also grabbed a hat trick.  Tom continued to dominate on the left and was fouled in the area.  Jayden calmly took the penalty and slammed it home off the goalies gloves, for the team’s second penalty in two weeks.  Although trying hard all day, Noranda were not able to threaten Wanneroo with only two shots at goal.

Goal scorers A Foster – 4, J Pimmaso – 3, J Rayner – 2, T Cleary – 2, OG - 1.

Ellenbrook 0    Wanneroo City 8

Wanneroo City traveled out to Ellenbrook in pouring rain, which broke for the first half, but was otherwise a very cold morning.  Wanneroo started with only 9 players, due to sickness and poor map reading.  Ellenbrook started with 12 just to make things more interesting, after scoring the first goal we were able to alert the ref and get things changed.  Arun finally arrived 10 minutes into the first half, and Wanneroo played the rest of the match with 10 men.  Ellenbrook are a new team, and are not yet able to compete with the stronger Wanneroo players.  Halftime score 5-0.

The second half was very wet and miserable, and although Wanneroo were dominating play, the scoring slowed.  Tom still managed to grab 4 goals in an excellent match. Although trying hard all day, Ellenbrook were not able to threaten Wanneroo with only two shots at goal.

Goal scorers T Cleary – 4, J Pimmaso – 1, B Porter – 1, A Kasipandy – 1, A Foster - 1.

Wanneroo City 3  Wembley Downs 2

Wanneroo City ran out worthy winners in another very close and thrilling encounter with Wembley Downs at home on the number 1 pitch.  Both sides started well, attacking and putting pressure on each others defence.  A counter attack by Wembley Downs, saw their fast No.11 make a strong run down the left wing, and a powerful finish netted Wembley the first score.  Wanneroo were unfazed, and soon settled down into playing their solid running and passing game.  A succession of passes and runs saw Tom make an excellent run in from the left, and a cut back shot into the near corner resulted in a goal.  Minutes later a through ball from Tom to Aiden saw Aiden provide an angled glancing shot to the far post, again low down.  Halftime score 2-1.

The second half was very even, with Wembley starting very strong and putting a lot of pressure on first time keeper Jake.  Eventually a minor mistake by Jake resulted in a goal to Wembley, although it could be argued that the ball had been kicked out of the goalies hands.  Back luck continued to follow Wanneroo as Aiden was clearly fouled in the area, but no penalty was awarded.  To their credit, the Wanneroo boys put these issues out of their mind and continued piling on the pressure, again a string of fine passes, saw Jayden receive the ball, right in front, and using his left boot struck a clean low down strike into the corner for a fantastic goal.  All twelve players had an excellent match, and should be very proud of their achievement.

Goal scorers T Cleary – 1, A Foster – 1, J Rayner - 1.

Wanneroo City 1 Floreat 2

Wanneroo City had a narrow loss to Floreat in a very close and keenly contested encounter at home.  Floreat only had 10 men, but still played very positive football all game.  Both sides started well, attacking and putting pressure on each others defence.  The best chance from Wanneroo came after Joel sent a through ball to Jayden, who was unmarked in front of goal, but he uncharacteristically fired over the cross bar.  Floreat mainly sent through long range shots which were easily cleaned up by goalie Tom.  Halftime score 0-0.

The second half was also very even, with Floreat working on the counter attack, and eventually got a solid shot on goal and scored the first.  Wanneroo replied immediately, and within minutes, Roiyan had made one of his strong runs, and finished neatly into the bottom right corner.  With the match tied up, Floreat lifted the intensity, and were soon successful in scoring again.  Wanneroo came close to scoring a couple more times, but were under a fair amount of pressure by Floreat defenders, and unable to convert.  All in all the players will have learned a lot from this match, and certainly it reflects the improvements the team has made since we first played Floreat in the first round.  Special thanks to Joel Keen who helped out while one of our players was ill.

Goal scorers:  R McGovern - 1.

The Jacks 3 Wanneroo City 2

Wanneroo City had a narrow loss to The Jacks up at Quinns Rocks.  Wanneroo only had 10 men, and this proved the difference in the end, as our players tired in the second half.  The Jacks started very strongly, attacking and putting pressure on Wanneroo’s defence, this forced a series of mistakes, and The Jacks had the first score on the board.  This woke Wanneroo up, and they started playing a lot better.  Tom was dominating his left wing and started looking dangerous.  However, it was a switch of play by Jayden, and Jason, which sent the right winger, Aiden, on his way that produced a goal.  Released into space, Aiden made a strong run forward, and resisted putting the cross in, and switched in board himself, leaving 2 defenders in his wake.  When he found himself right in front of goal, he calmly slotted it into the right hand corner with his left boot.  Halftime score 1-1.

In the second half Wanneroo started much stronger, and looked the more composed team.  Eventually this pressure paid off, when Jason was fouled just outside the area.  He sent in an excellent lofted ball, which The Jacks did not clear, the ball fell to Aiden, lurking on the edge of the area, who spotted Tom loose in the 6 yard box, and sent a crisp pass in.  With his back to goal, Tom resisted the urge to trap and turn, but instinctively used his left boot to deflect the ball into the right hand corner, another classy goal from Tom.  This goal now woke The Jacks up who now turned the intensity, and this resulted in a soft penalty being awarded, after some interference in the penalty area.  The Jacks converted, and as Wanneroo continued to tire, sensed they could score again.  This occurred soon after when a long range speculator caught our goalie by surprise, and the resulting fumble just wobbled over the line.  All in all a brave effort from the boys as they battled hard against a fast and skilful Jacks team.

Goal scorers:  A Foster – 1, T Cleary - 1.

Wanneroo City 5 Nedlands 0

Wanneroo City played Nedlands at home in what looked like being very wet and cold conditions, fortunately there was a break in the weather which lasted most of the match.  From the kickoff it became clear that Nedlands were missing one or two of their best players from when we first played them, as Wanneroo took total control.  The defense of Ben, Arun, Jake, Ricky and Joe H totally shut down the Nedlands forwards, and first half goal keeper, had a few saves to make but made them safely.  Slowly the Wanneroo midfield started to exert their dominance, and continued possession in Nedlands piled a lot of pressure on their defense.  A cross in from Joel to Jason, saw Jason make a mesmerizing run through the Nedlands defense to score Wanneroo’s first goal.  Minutes later a poor Nedlands clearance from a corner, spilt to Joel on the edge of the area, who no mistake with a lofted drive into the top right hand corner.  Halftime score 2-0.

In the second half Wanneroo started continued to pile on the pressure, with Joe G taking a turn in goal, Tom took total control of the left wing, and ran the Nedlands defense ragged.  Tom had three shots at goal which all narrowly missed due to the strong wind blowing.  Tom switched tactics, and started sending in crosses, one low hard cross found Aiden at the back post who made delicate deflection for the sides third goal.  Another cross from Tom minutes later, again found Aiden in front of goal, this time with a left footed tap in.  Wanneroo were totally on top at this stage, with Joe G only having one or two touches in the second half.  The final goal was cored after an excellent corner kick by Jason, which was not cleared by Nedlands, in the ensuing scramble, Arun stood tall with a nicely timed tap in.  The key feature of the Wanneroo’s performance was the team work, with the defense not panicking and always trying to pass out of defense.

Goal scorers:  A Foster – 2, J Pimmaso – 1, J Keen – 1, A Kasipandy - 1.

Ballajura 2   Wanneroo City 7

Wanneroo City played Balajura away at Kingfisher Reserve in fine but chilly weather.  The defense of Ben, Arun, Jake and Joe H were again outstanding, and first half goal keeper, Ricky, had a few saves to make but made them safely.  Soon the Wanneroo midfield fired up and released Tom on the left, who made a strong run in and finished clinically to register Wanneroo’s first goal.  Soon after, a thru ball from Joe G piled the pressure onto Ballajura defenders, who panicked and back passed to the goalie within the penalty area.  Tom took the penalty, and easily beat the goalie.  We then welcomed Roiyan back, as he made a surging run through the midfield, beating 3-4 defenders, and then finishing over the goalies head.  Minutes later he was given another opportunity, and made no mistake.  Halftime score 4-0.

In the second half Wanneroo started brightly with Tom making another run on the left and scoring within 20 seconds.  Ballajura soon responded with some strong attacks on their left, and soon scored two quick goals.  Meanwhile Aiden was working hard on the right wing but unable to make any progress.  However, this had the effect of opening up the left hand side, and taking the pressure off Tom.  Jason, Ricky, Joe G and Roiyan were switching play and moving the ball around quickly in the midfield.  Tom was soon making another run on the left to score his fourth goal.  The final goal came after a strong run by Ricky who had only the keeper to beat, he stroked the ball into the keepers arms, but it spilled out, he nimbly chipped the ball over the keeper, but was denied on the line by a desperate save by a defender, the ball then spilled out to a hard running Joe G who had followed the play in, and he tapped in for a simple goal.  It wasn’t until after the match we found out that Joe G had been awarded the goal, as it looked like Ricky’s second shot had gone over.  This match showed how much the team has improved over the season, since our narrow loss to Ballajura back in May.

Goal scorers:  T Cleary – 4, R McGovern – 2, J Gregory – 1.

Wanneroo City   1   Stirling Lions   1

Wanneroo City drew with Stirling Lions in a close and thrilling draw.  The closeness of the score emphasizing how little there was to separate the teams.  Wanneroo started the best with some excellent attacking moves.  At times they were surrounding the Lions goal, but unable to penetrate.  However, some excellent vision and passing by Jason and Aiden eventually saw the ball passed to Tom who was unmarked, and he made no mistake.  As the half wore on, the Lions stepped up and were soon making strong runs at Wanneroo’s goal, and after some scrambling in the area, one of the Lions young lady players neatly finished to level the scores.  Halftime score 1-1.

In the second half the match became a battle of defenses, as end to end football really tested the fitness of both players.  Wanneroo’s defence of Ben, Arun, Ricky and Joe H were outstanding all day, and really worked incredibly hard to shut down the fast strong runners from the Lions.  First half goal keeper Jayden had everything covered, and second half goal keeper Jason pulled off the save of the year, diving low down to his right to deflect a shot away.  The midfield of Roiyan, Aiden and Tom worked hard all day, but found it difficult to find space to move and pass.  Jake, Joe G and Matthew were up front against a very fast and strong Lions defence which gave them nothing.  Both sides had chances in the second half with Aiden flashing a shot over the bar, and the Lions missing another penalty, but fittingly the match ended in a draw.

Goal scorers:  T Cleary – 1.

Kingsway Olympic 0   Wanneroo City   5

Wanneroo City ran our winners against a much improved Olympic team.  The first half started out very even with Olympic defending well, and limiting Wanneroo’s scoring opportunity.  Aiden was in goal, so Tom was switched to the right wing, but all action was on the left wing, where Jason was being swamped with defenders.  Olympic mounted a couple of good attacks that put our defense under pressure, one was fortunately called offside.  Tom was switched to his usual spot on the left and this gave Wanneroo some attacking momentum.  The first goal came to Roiyan, after some good lead up work by Arun, Jayden and Jason on the right wing.  Another good through ball from Arun, released Tom and he made no mistake with a fine finish into the top left corner.  Halftime score 2-0.

In the second half Aiden went back to the right wing, with Matthew looking after the goals.  The game was far more open with Tom and Aiden peppering the box with fine crosses.  Eventually the pressure told with firstly Aiden, and then Joe G and Arun all scoring fine goals from crosses.  Wanneroo’s defense of Ben, Jake, Ricky and Joe H were outstanding all day, and really worked hard to keep the ball in Olympics half.  Aiden was on fire in the second half, missing a penalty after Tom was fouled, and having a goal disallowed due to offside, he also missed 2-3 other close shots.  Matthew had one save to make late in the second half, else most of the action was in Olympics side of the pitch.  The amount of unselfish play was the key feature today with four of the five goals scored from crosses or passes to players in better position.

Goal scorers:  T Cleary – 1, A Foster – 1, R McGovern – 1, J Gregory – 1, A Kasipandy – 1.

Noranda  1   Wanneroo City   9

Wanneroo City ran out winners against Noranda which had two higher division players in their team for the match.  Wanneroo played their usual unselfish team oriented game, and quickly established many scoring opportunities, our radar was working too well and we missed many goals.  The game remained very close with Wanneroo not able to take control. Noranda had a lightning quick winger, who scored terrific goal from strong run on the right.  Halftime score 3-1.

In the second half Ben went back to the left back and totally shut down their dangerous winger.  The second half was far more open with Wanneroo controlling the game more and dictating play.  Tom had another day out, and scored a terrific goal from a free kick, curling the ball neatly into the top right hand corner to end up with another quad.  Ricky was shifted to centre forward, and finally scored, not one, but two great goals.

Goal scorers:  T Cleary – 4, A Foster – 2, R McGovern – 1, R Livock - 2.

Wanneroo City  12   Ellenbrook 0

Wanneroo City finished the season on a high note against a beginners team from Ellenbrook, again playing with only 10 men.  A feature of the day was excellent passing through the midfield, with many thru balls, and crosses.  Tom once again had a day out this time with 5 goals!!  Worthy mention to the 3 man defence of Joe Hooton, Arun and Ben who were rock solid all day and gave Ellenbrook absolutely nothing.  Jayden was rewarded for a consistent season in the key central midfield position with a hat-trick.  Well done lads, and we look forward to seeing many of you again next year.  Best wishes to Roiyan who is heading off to sunny New Zealand, his energy and enthusiasm will be missed.

Goal scorers:  T Cleary – 5, J Rayner – 3, A Foster – 1, J Gregory – 1, J Pimmaso - 2.
