Wanneroo City Move 4
Points Clear
Wanneroo maintained
their lead at the top of Division 1 with a clinical 6-0 victory away to
Ashfield. After struggling to score against Ashfield home & away
last year, the side adopted a very attack minded formation & were
rewarded with 6 goals. A great Brad McDonald run from midfield, was
abruptly halted when Ashfields Van Roy bodychecked him, resulting in
the defender receiving a red card as last defender (he had also been
already booked). Rowdy Yates stepped up & expertly dispatched the
free kick into the bottom left hand corner from 25 yards. Goal number 2
followed shortly after, with Yates the provider this time, delivering a
cross on to the head of Robbie Cuthbert who bulleted home his header.
No more goals followed in the first half as we struggled to open up the
play sufficiently to punish the 10 men of Ashfield.
Jordan Barnes was introduced & a new urgency was apparent in the
Wanneroo side as the 2nd half began. Further goals followed from Brian
Cairney (2) Danny Marsden & an own goal to complete the 6 goal rout.
We can now look forward to our Bunbury challenge next Saturday.
The Reserves won 4-0 earlier in the day thanks to goals from Dave
Herety(2), Nathan Diaz and Chris Williams. This leaves them tied at the
top of the League with Balcatta on 18 points.
The U'18s comfortably accounted for Ashfield 5-0 in the early kick and
are still one of the chasing teams in the title hunt.

Good Weekend For
Wanneroo City
All three teams moved
to the top of their respective leagues in what was a very good weekend
for Wanneroo City with three victories over Morley Windmills at Wotten
Reserve.
The 1st Team secured a 2-0 victory through goals from a Brian Cairney
penalty and Chris Pugh's tap in at the back post. This win left them
three points clear of the chasing pack.
The Reserve team got their season back on track with a 3-1 victory over
previously top placed Morley. Goals from Mike Carroll, Chris McDermott
and Dean Timmins.
Earlier in the day Wanneroo's youngsters beat Morley 4-1, to also go
joint top of their league.
This weekend Wanneroo City welcome Bayswater City, in what promises to
be a tough encouter for all three sides again.

MATCH REPORT – 1st Team
Queens Park 0 vs Wanneroo City 4
League Round 4
Wanneroo moved up to 2nd place in division 1 after a convincing 4-0
victory over a poor Queens Park side. Michael Carroll should have
opened the scoring after 20 seconds when he sliced his opportunity wide
of target, however only 3 minutes later he more than made up for his
miss, with a scorching volley from 20 yards which flew past the shocked
Queens Park goalkeeper. Brian Cairney added a 2nd from the penalty spot
& he also netted Wanneroos 3rd just before half-time. The only
disappointing aspect of the 1st half was the amount of chances missed,
especially given the quality of crossing being provided by Rowdy Yates.
The 2nd half proved to be a dull affair with Rob Cuthbert providing a
4th goal with a fine strike from the edge of the box.
Wanneroo should face a much tougher task this Saturday when they Face
Night Series winners Rockingham at Kingsway Reserve.
The Reserves also had a scrappy 2 - 1 victory and the U 18's won 7 -2.

MATCH REPORT – 1st Team
Wanneroo
City 2 vs Forrestfield 0
League Round 3
A fighting performance gave Wanneroo their 1st home win v Forrestfield
last Saturday. Less than10 minutes into the game & Wanneroo were
down to 10 men as an altercation between Glen Moore & Forrestfields
number 4 resulted in a red card for the Wanneroo man. The controversial
nature of the decision seemed to inspire the home side &
Forrestfield appeared to struggle against such commitment. Wanneroo
even had the luxury of missing a penalty when the Forrestfield keeper
guessed right to deny Brain Cairney his 1st league goal of the season.
Cairney then had a goal disallowed for offside, as did Guy McDonald
& the home support must have been wondering if it wasn’t to be
their day. However, Cairney gave his side a huge lift when he raced on
to a tremendous through ball from Pugh to smash the ball into the roof
of the net. Half-time 1-0 Wanneroo.
The 2nd half saw Forrestfield try to exploit their extra man advantage,
but an inspirational goalkeeping performance from young Daniel Holgate,
combined with a very disciplined defensive performance, meant
Forrestfield were to be denied time & again. Cairney finally sealed
the 3 points when a Rowdy Yates free-kick was headed back across goal
for Cairney to back-heel the ball into the net. Man of the match went
to 18 year old Rowdy Yates who gave a very mature, disciplined
performance.

MATCH REPORT – 1st Team
Gosnells City 0 v 2
Wanneroo
City
League Round 2
After the disaster of
our home game loss to Balcatta, we were faced with a challenging visit
to an inform Gosnells outfit in round 2. Not many tipsters forecast a
Wanneroo victory, but all present at the game had no dispute with the
result other than to say Wanneroo should have scored a couple more.
After Daniel Holgate
had produced a fine save to deny Gosnells what was to turn out their
best chance of the game in the first 5 minutes, Wanneroo dominated the
remainder of the match. A fine Rowdy Yates corner was dispatched
acrobatically by Jay McDonald. Brian Cairney had what appeared to be a
perfectly good goal disallowed by a controversial linesman’s
interpretation of when the ball is out of play. Matt Donlevy then
struck the crossbar & when the half-time whistle blew, we were
happy with our performance but hoping we wouldn’t regret the chances we
had missed.
Thankfully, we started
the 2nd half as we’d finished the 1st & were rewarded when Guy
McDonald joined his brother on the scoresheet to put us 2-0 ahead.
Brain Cairney then had another goal chalked off (for offside this time)
& he also missed 2 other glorious opportunities, but being an
ex-Gosnells legend, it’s understandable that the pressure must have
been getting to him.
Man of the match -
Glenn Moore, who’s DRIVE was much appreciated

MATCH REPORT – Reserves
Gosnells City 1 v 0
Wanneroo
City
League Round 2
Wanneroo Reserves lost their first league game of the season with a
scrappy performance against an organised Gosnells side.
Wanneroo started the stronger of the two sides with a good chance
falling to Chris Williams whose shot was stopped by the Gosnells
keepers legs. Wanneroo were looking more likely to score but the
chances were very few with Gosnells defending well.
The second half started with Wanneroo still struggling to break the
deadlock and the best chances of the half coming within ten minutes of
each other. Deane Timmings flew down the line past two defenders
to cut the ball back to Ollie who failed to get his shot off quick
enough and was tackled. The next best chance came through a cross
from the right which found Bruno unmarked at the back post with an
empty goal in front. The ball came off the top of his head and
over the bar for a goal kick.
Within five minutes the ball went down the other end and the forward
broke in from the right past two defenders the shot was saved by Sam,
but the ball continued to bounce around the penalty area with blue
shirts shooting at will. Sam made another two great saves before
the fourth shot found its way back into the net with Gosnells 1-0
up and only ten minutes to go.
Wanneroo failed to get any more shots on goal and just didn’t create
enough chances in a scrappy performance. Best to forget and move
on to todays big game and perform to your best as we all know you can.

MATCH REPORT – 1st Team
Stirling Lions 2 v 1
Wanneroo
City
Cup Round 1
Firstly congratulations to all at the club for a
great effort during the night series. I think we all know we could be
sitting with 1 trophy on the shelf already, but we have to look at the
positives from the campaign & the signs for the season ahead are
good. We haven’t had a great turnover of personnel at the club &
that’s mainly due to the people at the club being a happy bunch of
people who all want the club to succeed.
Last weeks cup-tie saw us visiting Premier League
Stirling Lions, complete with their beautiful newly laid pitch & 4
players back from duty with Perth Glory. Our under 18s got the day off
to a great start with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory. Too many
players made massive contributions to mention, but what about the save
Daniel Holgate made when the score was tied at 0-0? That was
unbelievable!
Our reserve squad also represented the club well
& only lost out on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Penalties don’t seem
to be our thing at the moment.
The 1st team game provided a good challenge for
our lads & I feel we stood up well. We knew we’d sacrifice a lot of
possession to Stirling in the 1st half & that proved to be the
case. Mark Antony is a very talented wee man & he was behind the
opening goal with a 30 yard strike being too powerful even for the
inform Daniel Holgate to hold & a suspiciously offside looking Rory
Feely poked home the rebound.
The 2nd half was a complete turnaround for our
guys with Brain Cairney finishing off a great move to bring a deserved
equalizer. As expected, decisions weren’t to go in our favour
& after a dubious free kick was awarded on the edge of our box,
Hesketh stepped up to fire home an unstoppable strike. A lesser group
of players would have folded against such adversity, but not this
Wanneroo side. Back they came & were denied a blatant penalty when
a desperate Stirling defender lunged into a challenge on Guy McDonald
sending young Guy spinning into the air. The referee was the only man
in the stadium who seemed to think that no offence had taken place. A
few other close escapes meant Stirling will progress to the next round
& we wish them well. Hopefully, our boys will now be even more
focused on the main priority for this season & we all know what
that is. Good luck lads

MATCH REPORT – RESERVES
Stirling Lions 2 v 2
Wanneroo
City
Cup Round 1
Stirling won – 6-4 on penalties
Wanneroo started the stronger of the two teams
with Brad McDonald and Chris Williams dominating the midfield.
Wanneroo should have taken the lead with good chances falling to Ollie
Patterson and Chris Williams, with the Stirling keeper making some good
saves.
Against the run of play, the ball came in wide
from the right – some slack marking at the back post saw us concede a
sloppy goal. We went into the half-time break 1 goal down.
The second half kicked off and within 10 minutes
we were level with a good move down the left with Cameron finding
Gareth who passed to Ollie who crossed for Wimbo to score a good goal,
and put us back on level terms.
This seemed to make Stirling step up a gear and
start to put pressure on our makeshift defence with Dermo keeping them
out on a number of occasions, but eventually the ball fell in the box
in a bit of a pinball type scramble and the ball just seemed to roll in
over the line – Stirling were up 2-1 with 10 minutes to go.
Mike Carroll passed the ball out to Cameron at
left back position and Cameron went on an amazing run past 4 defenders
before being brought down in the box for a Wanneroo penalty.
Cameron took the penalty – with the keeper saving – but who moved too
soon, so a retake was necessary. This time Wimbo took the penalty
and slotted the ball straight down the middle – Wanneroo leveling the
score 2-2.
The last 10 minutes of the game has Callum on the
floor with cramps which has the coach worried as Callum had only been
on for 20 minutes. Deane Timmings also rolling around with cramps
– do these boys need more running or what??
The game goes end to end for the last 10 minutes
with Dermo almost winning the game in the dying seconds, but couldn’t
get any power in his header.
PENALTIES – OH NO – Wanneroo seem to have the
taste for going down to the final line with penalties as the decider.
Stirling scored 4out of 4 penalties
Wanneroo scored through Brad and Chris, with Wimbo
and Ollie launching the ball over the bar.
Good effort all round lads. Same old
problems with penalties. Now we will just have to concentrate on
winning the league!!
Man of the match – Dermo – where did the pace come
from – oh hang on Jacki was watching – maybe Dermo needs to ensure that
she comes along to watch a bit more often!!

MATCH REPORT – U

Stirling Lions 0 v 2
Wanneroo

Cup Round 1
Wanneroo U18’s fielded a strong side in the cup
tie against Stirling Lions with three of the squad, Daniel Holgate,
Carl Dunne and Joshua Booysen stepping down from the 1st team to take
the field at Macedonia Park. However it was an all round team
effort that saw the Roos defeat a fancied Lions team 2-0 with goals
from Joshua Booysen and Craig Tooley.
Michael McPherson lead his team by example,
grafting hard in the midfield and while all 14 players used made a
contribution to the victory the hard running of Josh Reid was
especially noted.

Progress to Night Series Final 2009
|
 |
Wanneroo have progressed to the final of the 2009
Night Series after securing a nail biting victory over tournament
favourites Forrestfield United. Wanneroo were the dominant side in the
1st half & were rewarded for their attacking display when Brian
Cairney finished off a flowing move to put the Roos 1-0 up.
Unfortunately, the gloss was taken off a good 1st half performance when
Forrestfield equalized from a well worked set-piece on the stroke of
half-time. The 2nd half saw Wanneroo still causing problems for the
opposition defence & this pressure resulted in Forrestfield
conceding a penalty when their last defender tripped Brian Cairney, who
then picked himself up to fire home his 2nd goal of the night.
Surprisingly the referee didn't even speak to the Forrestfield
defender, even though the laws of the game state clearly what
punishment he should have received. Forrestfield to their credit never
gave up & with Wanneroo failing to capitalize on numerous breakaway
opportunities, the game was far from over. Young Daniel Holgate
produced a vintage performance in the Wanneroo goal, but he was finally
beaten in the 93rd minute of the game with another well worked
Forrestfield set-piece. Naturally, the Wanneroo players were shattered
by this, as they didn't even have time to take kick-off before the
match went to a penalty shootout. This was a huge test for a squad so
young with 17 year old Michael McEwan shouldering the responsibility of
the 1st penalty very well. 18 year old Rowdy Yates fired home &
then once again 18year old birthday boy Daniel Holgate produced 2 great
saves to leave Matt Emery, and then captain Jay McDonald to score the
decisive penalties. A great show of character from this fantastic group
of lads. Wanneroo now go on to play in the final v Rockingham City this
Saturday 21st March, 6:30pm at Dorrien Gardens.
Congratulations to everyone involved with the
club, Wanneroo is heading in the right direction and hopefully we will
start the season off with some silverware this Saturday night.

Juniors Dec 08 |
 |
The Wanneroo City Soccer Club Juniors enter a new
era in 2009 with the official amalgamation of the Wanneroo City Junior
Soccer Club. After a successful transition year in the 2008
season the members of the junior club voted to wind up the WCJSC and
join with the WCSC, forming a junior base that will have teams from 6's
to 16's. This is a fantastic step forward for the club, which now
caters for juniors of all standards and ambitions.
The Junior Working Committee has been hard at work
since mid 2008,
putting in place plans to take the club from 70 players to around 200
when the new season commences. The committee will work with the
senior committee to ensure the optimum playing options and conditions
for junior players to play in 2009. The Junior Committee is:
Junior Chairman - Dean Bell
Football West Liaison - Steve Hallam
Junior Secretary - Kerry Zeplin
Junior Treasurer - Linda Launders
Registrar - Charlotte Hosking
Equipment Coordinator - Ciaran Launders
Kit Coordinator - Allan Stuart
Grounds Coordinator Kingsway - Dean Bell
Grounds Coordinator Cabrini - Rob Long
Canteen Coordinator Kingsway - Linda Launders
Committee – Dawn Whyman
Committee – David Udy
Of course, there is plenty of room for more people
to get involved with
the junior committee. It will need many hands to help make the
work load fair for all in 2009 as we take on the task of expanding the
junior teams by such a large amount.
The trials for the club's Premier and 1st Division
Teams were held
recently and the teams are now being finalised for the 2009
season. We welcome some new faces to the coaching panel and
welcome back some of the hard working coaches from 2008. The
coaches for theses teams are:
Youth Development Officer - Matt Emery
16's Division 2 - TBA
14's Division to be confirmed - Fred Roberts
13's Premier - Stuart Cox
11's - Wayne Stone
11's Development Team - Marty Burke
Apart from these higher division teams we will
also field other teams
in the 11's, 12's, 13's, 14's & 15's. Registration for these
will be at the Club Registration Day in February.
Rooball will also be entering a new era in
2009. The concept of
Rooball will begin to be phased out and "Small Sided Football" will
take over. This is a directive from the Football Federation of
Australia and will eventually see modified games played for all players
from 6-12 years, replacing the current Rooball structure for 6-10 year
olds and also seeing 11-12 year olds moving from full sided games to
modified games.
In 2009 there will be Small Sided Football
introduced for 6's, 7's, 8's
and 9's. 10's will still play the existing Rooball format and
11's and 12's will stick to the full sided games. There will be
new positions needed to run the Small Sided Games, including SSF Game
Day Coordinator, SSF Game Day Liaison Officer and SSF Game
Leaders. We will be telling you more about this in the New Year
as we get up to speed with SSF format.
We look forward to seeing all our 2008 players
from both clubs back for
the 2009 season. It promises to be challenging and exciting.

| A MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT |
 |
Hello and welcome to the Wanneroo City Soccer Club
website.
As you may already know, there have been a lot of
changes at the
Wanneroo Soccer Club during the past few weeks. We at the Club would
like to thank the old President, Steve Hallam and his Committee for
their efforts for the last season and wish them all the best for the
future and hope to still see them supporting the Club at games and
functions.
My name is Jason Hope and I have been elected to
represent the Wanneroo
City Soccer Club as the new President. I am looking forward to this
challenge. I have been playing football for as long as I can remember
and love playing and supporting the greatest game on earth!
I played for Wanneroo British Soccer Club during
1989-1990 when John
Brown and Willie Kelly were coaches and the late Tom Atkinson was
President. After that I played for Sorrento for a few seasons and then
went on to Perth City who merged with Wanneroo British to form the
current club of Wanneroo City Soccer Club – a club which I am very
passionate about. During this past season I was coach for the State
League Reserves who triumphantly went on to win the title.
I would like to invite the old faces and
supporters of the Club to come
back on board for the new 2009 season, as I am excited at the new
changes and attitude towards the Club. We also have a strong goal of
forming a good relationship with our Juniors, Amateurs and Masters
sides and look forward to a new season as a strong Club with a proud
history, moving in the right direction. Go the Roos!! 2009 here we
come!

from the 1st Team Coach |
 |
Welcome to all Wanneroo City players for season
2009, from your strip washing, vice p
resident, 1st team coach. I don’t want any players telling me I’m
playing them out of position, because if I’m selling hot dogs, washing
strips, going to committee meetings, coaching & still the best
player at the club, then you’ll just play in whatever position, or
team, I pick you!
The close season has not been a quiet time for
some of us at the club,
as we’ve been forced to elect an all new committee & president.
Jason Hope was chosen as the new president after a close run battle
with David Murray (some Scottish guy who says he’s experienced in
working with clubs in financial difficulty). I’ve been asked to
continue with our 10 year plan in the role of 1st team coach, supported
by my ever loyal English friend Nick Edwards. Jason “coach of the year”
Hope will have a huge task holding on to his championship winning
reserve squad. We all know Perth Glory were interested in one of the
squad last year, but latest rumours are that Dianella are ready to
swoop for some of our players; we can only try our best to compete in
such a competitive market.
Dave Barnes is returning to Wanneroo City and
along with Keith Traynor,
they form a formidable coaching team for our under18 squad. Our feeder
club (ECU under 16s) are expected to provide their usual supply of
quality players.
Brian Cairney, club player of the year, top
goalscorer & Celtic
fan, has committed himself to a long term deal (he’s staying as long as
I’m there). He has refused a few offers to move on, including a
lucrative deal south of the border (sounds too much like Henrik).
We will be going all out to improve the club both
in league position
and financially. With the great bunch of people we now have, I feel we
have a better base to achieve our aims.
Training resumes for all senior players Tuesday
6th January, 7pm start
at Kingsway reserve. Enjoy your Christmas & new year celebrations
but just remember, “fat guys will struggle”.
Should you have any queries, please do not
hesitate to contact me via
return email or on 9271 5266.
Thank you.
Kind regards
Gerry McEwan
